A simple pantry staple

Homemade Light Brown Sugar

Two ingredients, one spoon, and a few quiet minutes make approximately 2 cups.

Method

  1. Place the sugar in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the molasses.
  3. Use a sturdy spoon to press and stir the molasses into the sugar. Break apart the darker clumps as you work.
  4. Continue mixing until the color looks even and the sugar feels soft and fluffy.
  5. Transfer the brown sugar to an airtight container and store it in a cool, dry pantry.

From my kitchen

The real batch, ready for the pantry.

This is the light brown sugar I made at home with organic cane sugar and molasses. Organic cane sugar is not required—it is simply what I had in my pantry. Its texture is a little softer, fluffier, and more moist than store-bought brown sugar, and it worked beautifully.
